UEFA EURO 2008 - Berne
|
Stade
de Suisse Wankdorf (stadium capacity 30,000). The Stade de Suisse was
reopened in June 2005. The modern stadium stands on the site of the former
Wankdorf Stadium, demolished in 2001, in Berne’s Wankdorf suburb where the
1954 FIFA World Cup™ final between Germany and Hungary (3-2) was played. The
stadium includes a shopping centre, restaurants, offices, flats, a school,
and is the home of BSC Young Boys, one of the oldest clubs in Switzerland. |
Visit Berne - Wandering through Bern’s UNESCO-protected Old Town can
be a magical experience – few cities in the world are so visibly wedded to
their distant past, with architecture and a street plan essentially
unchanged since medieval times. The most hectic shopping goes on in the
western half of the Old Town, on Marktgasse and Spitalgasse in particular;
the older, eastern half is slow paced and tranquil. However, not for nothing
does the tourist office tout the famous arcades, lining both sides of every
street in the Old Town, as being “the longest covered shopping promenade in
the world”. In a strange turnaround of expectations, it’s when you walk
under the crowded arcades that you get a full-on blast of modern
consumerism, with music, shop windows and advertising vying for your
attention. Step a few metres to the side to walk in the open air and – with
a little imagination – it’s easy to picture yourself in the Bern of the
sixteenth century. |

Shopping in Berne Shopping Bern should begin in the square mileage
of arcades that currently comprise the ancient Old Town. The open-air malls,
replete with boutiques and restaurants, are covered and thus still suitable
for rainy-day sales.
Farmer’s markets can also be found in this area, as residents come to
grab fresh produce, flowers, and meats in the Bundesplatz and Munsterplatz
on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Most Bern stores are open Monday through Saturday, with the main railway
station being the only locale with open Sunday shops. Hours are short on
Mondays, mostly limited to the afternoon, while other weekdays host fuller
business hours (Saturdays are 8-4).
A Crafts Market is known to bustle on the first Saturdays of every month,
save January and February, and the Flea Market on Muhlepatz in the Matte
swarms with shoppers every third Saturday from May through October. |
